History

  • about AD 970 - Construction of a Frankish castle
  • 1142 - Conrad III builds an Imperial Castle
  • 1144 - First documentary mention of 'Rodenburch'
  • 1274 - Town elevated to Free Imperial Town
  • 1356 - Earthquake finally destroys the remains of the castle
  • About 1400 - Economic heyday under Mayor Heinrich Toppler
  • 1525 - Rothenburg becomes caught up in the Peasants' War
  • 1544 - The town converts to Protestantism
  • 1618-1648 - The town is conquered several times during the Thirty Years' War
  • 1631 - According to the legend, Mayor Nusch saved the town from destruction by General Tilly by emptying a large jug of wine in one draught (the 'Meistertrunk')
  • 1802 - Rothenburg annexed to Bavaria
  • Since 1850 - Romantic painters and poets 'discover' the town
  • 1900 - First listing of buildings (preservation orders) to encourage tourism
  • 1945 - 40 percent of the town destroyed
  • by 1970 - Reconstruction of the damaged parts of the town
