Friedberg

An enchanting setting

Friedberg, the Old Bavarian ducal town, lies in the middle of the region formerly owned by the Wittelsbach family, which is laden with history. Particular attractions for the visitor are the Wittelsbach Events Centre and Museum in the Wittelsbach Castle, the renaissance town hall, the historic old town centre with its crooked little lanes, as well as the mediaeval town defences with their towers and panoramic views of the expansive plains flanking the river Lech.

History

  • 1264 Town founded by the Bavarian Duke Ludwig II as a bastion against the bishops of Augsburg and to protect the salt route
  • 13th / 14th century Town destroyed on several occasions
