Leisure and sport on the Romantic Road

Leisure and sport are very important on the Romantic Road

In the towns and regions along the Romantic Road, travelers can practice a wide variety of sports. One of the reasons are the different landscapes and topographical features.

In the lowlands on the Main and Tauber there are different conditions for sports and leisure time than in the foothills of the Alps and in the Allgäu Alps. However, as a traveler you will be able to take advantage of a wealth of attractive offers everywhere along the Romantic Road.

From river Main to the Alpes

Let’s start on the Main in Würzburg. Here, as everywhere else on the Romantic Road, hikes and bike tours are available. The special feature here are charming paths through the vineyards or jogging on the banks of the Main.

For water sports and wellness fans, there is a large outdoor pool and two indoor pools with saunas in Würzburg. Würzburg offers something very special for golfers. One of the most beautiful and varied golf courses in southern Germany is located above the roofs of the city on a high plateau. There are other well-kept golf courses in Bad Mergentheim, Rothenburg o.d.T., Dinkelsbühl, Donauwörth and Augsburg. People who enjoy watching sporting events have the opportunity to attend professional basketball and football matches.

There are countless opportunities to get active along the Tauber between Wertheim and Rothenburg. Hiking, cycling, swimming and relaxing in outdoor and indoor pools, rowing and paddling in a boat on idyllic leisure lakes – the offer is huge. A canoe tour on the Tauber is particularly fun.

Tauberbischofsheim is a stronghold for fencing enthusiasts and in Bad Mergentheim you should visit the large animal park.

At Creglingen, the Münsterseen bathing paradise beckons.

Countless opportunities for adventure seekers

In Rothenburg o.d.T. there is a hot air balloon launch site. From here, beautiful balloon rides can be undertaken over the romantic Franconian landscape.

The Frankenhöhe is an ideal area for hiking and cycling tours. There are beautiful trails for mountain bikers here. On the way to Feuchtwangen, a detour to the Dombühl Beach natural adventure pool is worthwhile. Another highlight is the Hessenberg near Dinkelsbühl. Middle Franconia’s highest elevation is a paradise for paragliders.

The Ries with its geotopes offers hiking opportunities in very special landscape formations and the Wörnitz, a natural tributary of the Danube, is an idyllic area for canoeists.

In Donauwörth, the local recreation area of Riedlinger Seen is ideal for activities on a beautiful summer’s day. The city of Augsburg, in turn, is an ideal place for active and passive sports lovers. Visitors to the stadium can watch FCA games in the first Bundesliga, and there are exciting training sessions for whitewater canoeists on the Augsburg ice channel.

The Mandichosee near Augsburg is a beautiful body of water for sailors and windsurfers and on the Friedberger See a water ski lift is a special attraction.

Nature lovers can visit the wildlife park in the Pössinger Au near Landsberg am Lech, and the historic Lech raft on the Schongauer Lechsee starts in Schongau from July to September. Between Peiting and Rottenbuch, a hike into the wild and romantic Ammer Gorge nature reserve with the Kalkofensteg is worthwhile. In the Paffenwinkel, a paradise for cyclists, there are a number of beautiful bathing lakes with excellent water quality. These include the Schwaigsee between Rottenbuch and Wildsteig and the Illasbergsee near Halblech.

In winter, the Allgäu mountains invite alpine and cross-country skiers to their slopes. There are also natural toboggan runs, ice rinks for skaters and curling specialists.

Buchenberg and Tegelberg are El Dorado for hang-gliders and paragliders. Füssen is the ideal vacation spot for sailors, standup paddlers and windsurfers. The Forggensee offers the best conditions for this. If you don’t dare to go on the water with one of these vehicles, you can take a tour of the lake on passenger ships. Another tip is the forest adventure center in Ziegelwies with its spectacular treetop path.

Of course, all these suggestions for leisure and sport are just a small excerpt from the huge leisure and sport program that the Romantic Road has to offer.
