Itinerary
Day 1: Würzburg – Wertheim
The starting point of the tour is the residence of the prince-bishops in Würzburg, which has been a UNESCO cultural heritage site since 1981. Wertheim Castle is one of the most beautiful stone castle ruins in southern Germany.
Day 2: Wertheim – Schillingsfürst
Unique baroque gardens can be found at Gamburg Castle and Weikersheim Castle. The Kurmainische Schloss in Tauberbischofsheim was once the official seat of the Mainz Electorate, while the Teutonic Order shaped the history of Bad Mergentheim. The castle park is laid out extensively in the English style.
Day 3: Schillingsfürst – Harburg
The baroque castle of the Princes of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst offers a magnificent view over the Franconian Heights. Not far from the summer residence of the Princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein lies Baldern Castle, built in the Baroque style and still owned by the family today. Above the small town of the same name lies Harburg Castle, built in the 12th century to protect the old trade route.
Day 4: Harburg – Schwangau
Continue south along the Lech river, past the former castle in Rain and the Wittelsbach castle in Friedberg, across the Pfaffenwinkel to the Wieskirche church and on to the Königswinkel. Before visiting the two royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, we recommend a visit to the Museum of the Bavarian Kings.
Day 5: Füssen
The last castle on the Romantic Road in Bavaria’s highest town is the High Castle in Füssen. The late Gothic castle was the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg for centuries and offers the most beautiful view of the town on the Lech.
