Enjoy the autumn sun in Schillingsfürst on the Frankenhöhe
Schillingsfürst – a city with an over 1000 year history
Outside of the Frankenhöhe Nature Park region, the town of Schillingsfürst is known to very few. It’s actually a shame, as the place has a lot to offer. But one after anonther. We start our sightseeing tour at the fountain house. It’s a bit out of the way, directly on the slope of the Frankenhöhe. The view is fantastic. He goes over in the direction of Rothenburg. The Romantic Road meanders through the valley. Here it is a small idyllic street with little traffic.
Picnic in front of the fountain house
Directly in front of the fountain house is a wooden table with two benches. This is an ideal place for a leisurely rest. We brought a carafe of water and a thermos with tea. The bright October sun warms our backs and we enjoy the beautiful Sunday afternoon with a leisurely picnic.
There are still numerous meadow orchards on the slopes of the Frankenhöhe. They help to preserve old fruit varieties. Old apple trees stand in front of the fountain house, densely hung with ripe fruit. A juicy apple for dessert – delicious!
The fountain house with ox treading facility and museum
Now, on the way to the parking lot, we take a closer look at the historic fountain house. Inside you can visit the ox treading facility, which is unique in Germany. It was built to supply water to the princely palace. The completely preserved wooden pumping station was formerly driven by oxen and impressively documents a piece of technological history. A part of the museum shows the living culture of the 18th century. Old handicrafts are presented on the four floors of the tower. A classic herb garden is added to the historic building ensemble.
On our way to the cardinal’s garden we always find spectacular views down into the valley.
Baroque palace of the princes of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst
Baroque palace of the princes of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst
After a few hundred meters we are in front of the baroque palace of the princes of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst. It stands on a mountain spur and can already be seen from afar in the valley. The interiors can be visited with the original interior from the 18th century. The castle complex is surrounded by a beautiful park that offers wonderful views across the valley. An exhibition in the palace provides an overview of the checkered history of the French Foreign Legion, whose origins can be traced back to Schillingsfürst.
Right next door is the Fürstliche Falkenhof. It offers its visitors flight shows worth seeing with the fascinating birds of prey. Unfortunately, no show was planned for this afternoon.
Finally – a Radler in the castle café
After the afternoon is well advanced and we’ve been on our feet for quite a while, we treat ourselves to a rest in the castle café’s beer garden before heading home. From here you have a wonderful view over the town center of Schillingsfürst far towards Feuchtwangen. Our visit to the Frankenhöhe gave us beautiful, contemplative moments. We will surely come back.
