In place of the two castle ruins of Vorderhohenschwangau and Hinterhohenschwangau, King Ludwig II had Neuschwanstein Castle built from 1869-1886 in the style of an old German knight’s castle, at a “spot that is one of the most beautiful to be found” (Ludwig II wrote to Richard Wagner). Neuschwanstein Castle has been one of the most famous buildings in the world ever since. King Ludwig II died on June 13, 1886, even before the construction work was completed. Shortly after his mysterious death, Neuschwanstein Castle was opened to visitors every day and has attracted enthusiastic visitors from all over the world ever since.
