The old Schongau Castle was used by Duke Christoph the Strong in the 15th century as a Wittelsbach secondary residence, later it was the seat of the Pfleger (district judge) of Schongau, district office, then district office of the district of Schongau until 1972, since then it has housed the district office of the Weilheim-Schongau district. Two castle towers were blown up during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704.
