UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the Romantic Road

54 natural and cultural sites in Germany are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
They include architectural and artistic masterpieces, a variety of different cultural landscapes and parks, unique nature reserves and sites that evidence social and technological developments. Taken as a whole, they bear witness to the wide variety of Germany’s natural and cultural heritage. And four sites along the Romantic Road are to be found on the UNESCO list.

Würzburg Residence with the Court Gardens and Residence Square (1981)

The Frontier of the Roman Empire (2005; extended 2008) near Dinkelsbühl

The Roman Empire is one of the largest empires ever to have existed. The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes is part of the fortified Roman frontier, with its forts, watchtowers, walls and palisades, which the sometime world-power built to separate itself from ‘Free Germania’. It is here that the highly developed culture of Roman Antiquity met the cultural Third World of the Germanic ‘barbarians’. learn more >

Geopark Ries

15 million years ago, there was a huge “bang” in the Nördlinger Ries: a rock from outer space hit with great force and created a gigantic crater – today’s Nördlinger Ries.This region has since been designated the first National Geopark in Bavaria. The new Geopark also includes surrounding areas of the Franconian and Swabian Alb.The center of the Geopark is the town of Nördlingen.It is located right in the impact crater. The Ries Crater Museum in Nördlingen provides information about the interesting geological past of the Ries.
