Unspoiled nature & beautiful landscapes accompany the Romantic Road

Nature and landscapes along the Romantic Road are diverse and varied. They are shaped not least by the rivers that the route follows. In Würzburg, the starting point of the route, it is the Main and the surrounding vineyards that determine the landscape.

The Romantic Road follows the Tauber, reaches the Wörnitz, which flows into the Danube in Donauwörth. From Augsburg it is the Lech that accompanies the holiday route to the foothills of the Alps. In Füssen, it is the Allgäu Alps that provide a worthy conclusion with their magnificent backdrop.

The town of Schillingsfürst is at the very top of the Frankenhöhe, in the middle of which you can visit the source of the Wörnitz. The Wörnitz accompanies the traveler to Donauwörth where it flows into the Danube. The Wörnitz is a leisurely river that meanders through beautiful natural landscapes.
Between Dinkelsbühl and Harburg you can experience a special natural monument, the Ries. It is a wide valley that was formed by the impact of a meteorite about 14.5 million years ago. In the center of this impressive landscape lies medieval Nördlingen.

The Lech flows into the Danube between Donauwörth and Augsburg. The Romantic Road follows this river to its end point in Füssen. On the banks of the Lech, there are still some near-natural alluvial forests. This includes the species-rich Augsburg city forest. In Landsberg am Lech, travelers can visit the impressive Lech weir and hike in the extensive “Pössinger Au” wildlife park. A special feature is the “Devil’s Kitchen” with its turquoise-blue, clear water. Further south, near Hohenfurch, the road crosses the Pfaffenwinkel border.

Travelers marvel at the magnificent backdrop of the foothills of the Alps with their lush meadows, green forests, clear lakes and picturesque towns. In the south, the horizon is limited by the magnificent panorama of the Allgäu Alps. Shortly before the end of the Romantic Road, it crosses the Ammergebirge nature reserve with its four picturesque lakes. Passing the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, you have reached your destination in Füssen. The town lies on the shore of Lake Forggensee, the largest lake in the Allgäu.
