Princely location

Hallmarked by its long history as the family seat of the princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein, the market town of Wallerstein lies in the heart of the Ries district. The town centre is dominated by the famous Plague or Holy Trinity monument and the Parish Church of St. Alban.

History

  • AD 1188 Wallerstein Castle
  • 1238/1274 1st documentary mention of the town (then called ‘Steinheim’) and the Parish Church of St. Alban
  • 1261 Counts of Oettingen take possession of the castle and town
  • 1612-13 Reconstruction of the Parish Church of St. Alban
  • 1648 Castle destroyed
  • 16th – 19th centuries Systematic development of the market into a rural residence
  • 1722-25 Holy Trinity monument erected
