Würzburg – capital city of Main Franconian winegrowing

Enjoyment and culture characterize the Franconian wine regions on the banks of the Main. Numerous outstanding locations and young winegrowers with quality standards produce the finest drops for wine lovers and wine connoisseurs. The capital of Lower Franconia, Würzburg, is the center of Main-Franconian winegrowing. The grape varieties Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau, which are typical of Franconian wine, are grown on the best-known terroir “Würzburger Stein”.

The award-winning wines are bottled in Bockstüten bottles, which have been used as a trademark of good Franconian wine for centuries. Cellar tours and wine tastings in the pretty vinotheques of the Würzburg wineries are ideal for wine lovers.

Brückenschoppen on the Old Main Bridge

The construction of the stone Old Main Bridge began in 1476. However, the work was only finally completed in 1703. The twelve baroque bridge figures in the bulges of the bridge pillars show the Frankish Apostles, some Würzburg bishops and saints as well as Charlemagne and his father Pippin.

The Old Main Bridge is a popular meeting place for many Würzburg residents and guests from all over the world. Especially in the evening hours, the Main with the Marienberg Fortress and the Käppele in the background forms a magnificent backdrop. A pint of fine Franconian wine on a warm summer evening is an unforgettable experience for romantics.

Vineyard Kallmuth in Markt Triefenstein

The Kallmuth is an impressive vineyard in Markt Triefenstein and is located on the left side of the Main between Würzburg and Wertheim. He looks back on 900 years of viticulture. The slope with an extremely steep terrace system, which can be climbed over 260 steps, is one of the most important historical vineyard locations in Germany. Outstanding wines thrive here because of the special climatic and geological conditions. On the Kallmuth, the shell limestone of Mainfranken meets the Buntsandstein of the Spessart.

Tauber Valley vineyard tradition

The Tauber flows almost 100 km through the region from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Wertheim and is a constant companion of the vineyards that line the river valley. In the Tauber Valley, around 1100 hectares of cultivation area are cultivated by winegrowers and vintners. About 65% are planted with white wine vines and 35% with red wine vines. The leading varieties for white wines are Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner. When it comes to red wine, the most commonly grown grape is the black Riesling. The blue Pinot Noir and, as a regional specialty, the Tauberschwarz are also popular. This rare variety is only known in the Tauber region. It has experienced a real renaissance since the 1980s. Many winegrowers have set up stylish vinotheques for wine tastings and tastings in recent years.

Beckstein wine trail

Lauda-Königshofen is located in the center of the wine-growing region. Here, the vineyards have existed for centuries and are inseparable from the city. An informative wine trail was created in the Beckstein district. Interesting information about Beckstein and the history of viticulture is presented on a total of 20 overview boards. Halfway, the covered pavilion offers unique views over the village and the Beckstein Valley. Seating invites you to linger and rest.

Wine villages and winegrowers in the Romantic Road wine country offer their guests all kinds of packages – wine festivals, wine events, certified wine hotels and wine hikes. Wherever good wine is made, there are masters of their trade who are happy to share their knowledge as “wine guides” and enhance their guests’ stay with combined wine arrangements.

Röttingen, a small Franconian town that is over 900 years old, is one of the pearls on the Romantic Road and a state-approved resort. It nestles on the Tauber river and is surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills.

Museum vineyard and Stoodblick in Röttingen

The museum vineyard in the Roettinger Feuerstein site documents the development of viticulture up to the 1950s on an area of 1,800 square meters on three plots. It is equipped with different ungrafted grape varieties. Reading stone slides, vineyard cottages, dry stone walls and a wayside shrine of St. Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers, show a vineyard landscape as it may have looked centuries ago. The museum vineyard is cultivated by hand without the use of pesticides. It is a habitat and retreat for endangered fauna and flora.

The Stoodblick offers a fantastic view of the old town of Röttingen. It is furnished with lovingly designed benches and tables created by local saw artists.

The vineyards have their charms in every season. Either it blooms and turns green in spring, it ripens and thrives in summer, or nature becomes colorful and the grape harvest begins in autumn. Wine hikes and wine tastings with a cellar master, commented professionally and cheerfully, are popular attractions in the wine country on the Romantic Road.

Vinotheken

Many winegrowers have set up architecturally appealing wine shops in recent years. They offer a wide range of excellent, home-grown and pressed wines. Of course, wines can be tasted here. In addition, wine lovers will learn many interesting details about local wines, cultivation methods and terroir.

Heckenwirtschaften

Heckenwirtschaften are simple guest rooms, rustic barns or courtyards covered with vine leaves that only open their doors at certain times of the year, mostly in spring to serve fresh, young wine and in autumn at Federweißen time. Here the local winegrowers offer their own wines and small regional dishes. A bundle of brushwood or a broom hangs in front of the front door as a sign that the hedge farm is open.
