Romantic Road one of Germany’s top-ten sights

The towns, villages and landscapes along the Romantic Road, from Würzburg to Füssen, once again proved to be among the most powerful attractions offered by Germany as a holiday destination in a poll to find the country’s most popular tourist destinations. Between January and July 2021 the German National Tourist Board (DZT) asked around 14,000 foreign guests to choose their personal favourites. In the ranking of the TOP 100 sights and attractions of 2021, the Romantic Road took 6th place as one of the most popular destinations. The new ranking for 2021 is now available at www.germany.travel/top100.

Jürgen Wünschenmeyer, Managing Director of the Romantische Straße Touristik Arbeitsgemeinschaft, is delighted with this renewed distinction: “It shows once again that, with the Romantic Road, we have created an internationally renowned brand that is not only the most popular high-quality tourist route in Germany but also has an excellent image throughout the world. For us, this honour represents not only recognition but also an obligation to continue developing the high standards of the sights, attractions and programme modules along the route.” In this connection, the Romantic Road in its entirety is not alone on the new list: six other destinations along the route have also gained places among Germany’s top 100 sights and attractions: Neuschwanstein Castle took 3rd place, Rothenburg ob der Tauber 5th place, the Medieval Criminal Museum in Rothenburg 10th place, the Rothenburg Christmas market 21st place, the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Würzburg, the ‘Residenz’ and ‘Hofgarten’, 49th place and the Pilgrimage Church of Wies 82nd place.
For the first time, the results were also rated in eight categories: in ‘towns and cities’, Rothenburg ob der Tauber took first place. This Bavarian pearl also ranked among the leaders in the museum segment with its Medieval Criminal Museum and Christmas market. And, how could it be any different, Neuschwanstein Castle topped the ‘castles and palaces’ category.
