Romantic Road long-distance hiking trail
The blue signs with the Romantic Road logo indicate the long-distance hiking trail that runs for 500 km from Würzburg to Füssen. The route is ideal for less ambitious walkers and, as in the case of the long-distance cycling route sections, can be covered by taking the Romantic Road Bus to and from selected points. The route runs through the centre of all towns and villages so that historical architecture is always part of the tour. Changing menus mark the way from the wine-growing region of Franconia to Bavarian beer country and make the long-distance tour a culinary delight.
Information for visitors to the Romantic Road’s long-distance hiking trail
The long-distance hiking trail along the Romantic Road was formally opened in 2006 in the Prince Bishops’ Residence in Würzburg. The Romantic Road has changed its route in a number of places since then, and a number of encroachments into nature have changed the landscape, too. In consultation with the regional walking associations, the route has been adapted to accommodate the changes and, at the same time, to considerably enhance its attractiveness. It is signposted throughout and, in some places, the changes that have been made are also indicated. There is a new hiking guide to be published by hikeline Verlag in the autumn of 2021, which provides all details of the entire 500 km of the long-distance hiking trail in print.
Good to know:
The first opportunity for overnight accommodation on the way from Würzburg to Wertheim is to be found after slightly more than 30 kilometres in Helmstadt and, on the way from Nördlingen to Harburg, there is a stopover after barely 20 kilometres in Mönchsdeggingen. In both cases you should book in good time and bring enough food with you for your needs.
